Why Sailing Solo is the Best Decision I’ve Ever Made

Enjoying a solo adventure in Puerto Plata, docked between the majestic MSC Seascape and Celebrity Equinox.

Traveling alone isn’t new to me, but cruising solo on the MSC Seascape was a whole new adventure that pushed me to grow in unexpected ways. Over the past few years, I've sailed solo on more cruises that I've sailed with others, and the experiences can vary, but my most recent experience was enlightening. If you’ve ever considered traveling by yourself, let me tell you why a solo cruise should be your next trip.

It's not always easy, but it's a lot of fun!
Loved this display on the MSC Seascape. Traveling solo isn't always easy but it is very rewarding.

1. Discovering Yourself in a New Way

When you’re on your own in an environment that’s completely different from your everyday life, you’re forced to adapt, learn new skills, and connect with yourself. A cruise is a perfect setting for this because you’re surrounded by opportunities — from trying new cuisines to discovering hidden talents at a karaoke night. It also allows you to take that time out for yourself that you usually would put off when you're not on holiday. Plus, being at sea naturally encourages you to disconnect from the chaos of everyday life.

2. No Distractions, Just You

One of the best things about solo cruising is the absence of distractions. You’re not managing anyone else’s schedule or needs — it’s all about you. Whether it’s sipping a cocktail on the deck, indulging in a spa day, or enjoying the entertainment, everything is done on your terms. This level of self-focus is rare but so rewarding.

3. Total Freedom in Decision-Making

We live busy lives, often compromising for others - I know I definitely do, since I’ve got a very client-focused job. On a solo trip, you’re in full control of every decision. Want to have dinner at 9 PM and hit the piano bar after? Go for it. Feel like lounging by the pool all day? It’s your call. That freedom is incredibly empowering.

Unique Considerations for Solo Cruisers

Traveling solo comes with its quirks, especially on a cruise. Some cruise lines charge a single supplement — essentially making solo travelers pay close to double for a cabin. However, MSC Cruises offers great deals for solo travelers. Websites like Vacations to Go are a fantastic resource for finding discounted solo travel options.

Another aspect to consider is dining. Some cruise lines may seat solo travelers with others at larger tables. Personally, I prefer dining alone, but it’s all about your social comfort level. The beauty of a cruise is that you can be as social — or as solo — as you want.

Unforgettable moments with new friends on the cruise, each adding joy and laughter to the journey!

Making New Connections

Even though I traveled solo, my cruise experience was far from lonely. I made friends with an amazing group of people who completely transformed my trip. We laughed, explored, and shared moments that I’ll treasure forever. Traveling solo doesn’t mean you’re isolated; it’s an opportunity to connect with others on your own terms.

Entertainment and Activities for Solo Travelers

A lively production show lights up the Chora Theatre on the MSC Seascape, inviting guests to enjoy an entertaining night out.

Cruises are packed with activities, so boredom is never an issue. From production shows to cooking classes, there’s always something to do. I loved the freedom to pick and choose what suited my mood each day.

Solo cruising offers a perfect balance of independence, relaxation, and opportunities for connection. Whether you’re a seasoned solo traveler or trying it for the first time, a cruise is an incredible way to see the world and focus on YOU. So, what are you waiting for?
